Moses and the Burning Bush

Moses was tending his father-in-law’s sheep in the wilderness of Sinai. In the distance, he saw a bush: It was on fire, but the fire did not consume it. Curious, he drew closer. A voice called out to him from the bush: “Moses, Moses.” It was the Angel of the LORD.

“Here I am,” he answered.

“Take off your sandals—the place you are standing is holy ground,” the voice commanded. “I am the God of  your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.”

Moses was afraid, terrified to be face-to-face with God. The voice continued, “I have observed the misery of my people who are in Egypt; I have heard their cry on account of their taskmasters. I have come down to deliver them from the Egyptians, and to bring them up out of that land to a good and broad land, a land flowing with milk and honey. So come, I will send you to Pharaoh, to bring my people, the Israelites, out of the land of Egypt.”
Moses hesitated. Who was he, that he could go to Pharaoh and say such a thing? God had promised to be with him. But what would he say to the Israelites? When they asked him who had sent him, what answer would he give?

God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM. Thus you shall say to the Israelites, I AM has sent me to you. This is my name forever."
