The Crossing of the Red Sea

The Israelites departed from Egypt, setting out across the desert. When they came to the edge of the Red Sea, they stopped and made camp there.

When Pharaoh saw that they had gone, he had a change of heart. He mounted his chariot and led an army out to recapture his former slaves. The Israelites saw the approaching egyptians and turned on Moses in fear. "Was it because there were no graves in Egypt taht you hae taken us out to die in the wilderness?" they cried out to him.

God told Moses to stretch out his staff over the waters of the sea. And the pillar of fire and cloud, in which the Angel of God dwelt, moved behind the Israelites to block Pharaoh's advance. Moses stretched out his staff, and the sea parted. A path emerged from the waves as the water rose up on either side like solid walls. And the Israelites crossed the sea, walking on dry land.

Early in the morning, before it grew light, Pharaoh's army, his chariots and horses, enterd the sea in pursuit of the Israelites. God told Moses to stretch out his staff once again. The Egyptian chariots became mired in mud, and the army began to flee in panic. The waters rushed in and drowned them all.
